The Rainbow Mountains have become tourist attractions that draw large crowds of visitors worldwide, and without a doubt, they are worth exploring and visually enjoying their colorful landscapes. These unique destinations are rare and are found scattered in China, Argentina, and Peru. Specifically, in Peru, there are around three colored mountains.
In this article, we will focus on exploring the Colored Mountains of Cusco: Vinicunca, Palcoyo, and Pallay Punchu. Here, we will provide you with detailed information so you can choose the best option for your visit.

Vinicunca is the most visited of the colored mountains in Cusco, gaining its popularity in 2015 when it went viral on Instagram thanks to stunning photographs of its beautiful rainbow landscape. Located at 5200 meters above sea level, between the districts of Pitumarca and Cusipata, reaching the summit of Vinicunca requires approximately one and a half to two hours of hiking. The trail starts off flat, making the beginning of the journey easy, but it becomes steep towards the summit, requiring some physical effort. The reward for this effort is the beauty of its colors, ranging from red and brown to blue and green. About 30 minutes from Vinicunca, you can find the Red Valley, another attraction worth visiting.
You can explore Vinicunca on your own or through a travel agency, the latter being the most popular option as it includes transportation, food, a professional guide, and safety equipment such as a first aid kit and an oxygen tank.
Palcoyo is a colored mountain range near Vinicunca, located at 4900 meters above sea level in the district of Checacupe, Cusco. Its landscape stretches across a mountain chain with shades of reddish-pink, ochre, yellow, green, and white. Reaching the summit of Palcoyo, where you can delight in this stunning colorful landscape, requires only about 30 minutes of hiking compared to Vinicunca, with a much flatter and more accessible trail. If you prefer to avoid walking, you can admire the beauty of Palcoyo from the tourist bus parking area and take the classic photo from there. Palcoyo is less crowded than other destinations, allowing you to explore it peacefully and take the time you need to enjoy it.

Pallay Punchu is a relatively new tourist destination, discovered during the Covid-19 pandemic in 2020. Located in the district of Layo, province of Canas, it is the third Rainbow Mountain in the Cusco region, at an altitude of approximately 4791 meters above sea level. Its landscape resembles an Andean poncho with predominant colors like earthy red, yellow, green, and white. Reaching the summit of Pallay Punchu involves hiking along a steep trail for about four to five hours, with a moderate to challenging difficulty. From the summit, you can marvel at the view of Lake Langui Layo and the mountains of the Andes mountain range.

If you plan to visit any of these Rainbow Mountains in Cusco, it is recommended to do so during the dry season, which runs from March to October. During these months, Cusco enjoys sunny and rain-free weather, ideal for excursions and viewing the region's characteristic blue skies.
