The Nevado Chumpe, also known as Jatunriti, whose name in Quechua means "great mountain of ice," is the third-highest peak in Cusco, after the impressive Ausangate and the majestic Salkantay. This mountain, located in the Vilcanota Range, stands out for its large size and wide slope, offering a unique glacier climbing experience. The first ascent was made in 1955 by Piero Ghiglione, who named it Yanaloma. Throughout this expedition, adventurers can enjoy breathtaking ice landscapes and a technically accessible trek for those looking to surpass 6,000 meters (20,000 feet) for the first time.
The route to the summit of Chumpe offers a progressive climb through glaciers, reaching a slightly steeper section over a crevasse, adding an exciting touch to the climb. Unlike other more demanding mountains in the region, such as Ausangate, Chumpe is an ideal choice for those with a basic or intermediate level in mountaineering, providing a safe and challenging experience at the same time. It is the perfect opportunity to reach a six-thousand-meter peak and enjoy unique panoramic views of the Vilcanota Range.
Available only in the months of May, June, July, and August.
Embark on an unforgettable adventure in the Vilcanota Mountain Range with the Nevado Chumpe Climbing Expedition, one of the most impressive peaks in Cusco. Standing at an altitude of 6,110 m (20,040 ft), Chumpe offers a challenging yet accessible journey for mountaineers with basic and intermediate levels, providing the opportunity to conquer a six-thousand-meter peak surrounded by glacial landscapes and spectacular views.
The expedition lasts 5 days and 4 nights, starting in Cusco and traveling to Marampaki, where the journey towards Mullucocha Base Camp begins. Along the route, climbers will pass through glaciers, moraines, and high mountain trails, culminating in a summit ascent from which the majestic peaks of the Vilcanota Range can be admired in all their glory.
The adventure begins in Cusco at 3,400 m.a.s.l., from where we will depart in a private vehicle towards the town of Tinki, located about 3 hours southeast of the city. During the journey, we will enjoy panoramic views of the Vilcanota Range, home to towering mountains and Andean communities that preserve their traditions.
Upon arrival in Tinki, we will take a break to have lunch and regain energy. Afterward, we will take a taxi to the starting point of the trail that leads to Mullucocha Base Camp. The hike to Mullucocha takes approximately 5 hours, crossing Andean highlands, crystal-clear lagoons, and a natural environment that allows for progressive acclimatization. Finally, we will arrive at Mullucocha Base Camp (4,600 m), where we will set up our tents and rest, surrounded by majestic mountains.
After a hot breakfast at the camp, we will begin our hike towards the Advanced Base Camp (5,300 m). This segment takes approximately 5 to 7 hours and traverses high mountain terrain, where the cold climate and strong winds become more evident.
The route allows access for horses, which facilitates the transportation of heavy equipment; however, porters are not permitted to avoid overloading the animals. During the trek, we will witness rock formations and glaciers that prepare us for the challenge that awaits in the following days. Upon reaching Advanced Base Camp, we will set up our tents and rest early, as the next day's climb will be demanding.
The most anticipated day of the expedition begins at 1:00 a.m. with a light breakfast and the gear ready for the ascent. We will start the journey towards the summit of Nevado Chumpe (6,110 m), in a trek that will last between 7 and 9 hours. The path is mainly on glaciers, where we will use crampons, ice axe, and technical equipment to secure our climb.
As we progress, the slopes become steeper, and the landscapes turn breathtaking. Finally, upon reaching the summit, we will witness spectacular views of the Vilcanota Range and the towering snow-capped peaks that surround the area. After some time for photos and celebration, we will begin the descent of approximately 5 hours back to Advanced Base Camp, where we will rest after an epic day.
We will wake up with a sense of accomplishment and an impressive view of the glacier. After breakfast, we will dismantle the camp and begin our return to Mullucocha Base Camp. The descent trek takes approximately 5 hours, crossing moraines and high mountain sections that will take us back to the starting point.
During the journey, we will have the opportunity to capture unique photographs and enjoy the landscapes that, after conquering the summit, are appreciated from a different perspective. Upon arrival at Base Camp, we will set up our tents and share a dinner to celebrate our adventure.
Our last day begins early with a farewell breakfast at the camp. We will pack our belongings and start the 5-hour hike to the trailhead, where a taxi will be waiting to take us back to Cusco.
This will mark the end of an unforgettable journey through one of the most majestic mountains in the Vilcanota Range. The return to the city allows us to reflect on the adventure and share the experiences gained during this remarkable expedition.
