The Pallay Punchu 1-Day Tour invites you to discover one of the newest and most stunning mountains in southern Cusco. This little-visited destination stands out for its sharp shape and the natural colored stripes that cover its entire surface. At 4,791 m (15,719 ft) and 194 km from Cusco, this place has a stunning landscape. Geology, wind, and time have shaped it to look like a hand-painted scene.
On the way to the community of Layo, you will enjoy wide Andean panoramas and the impressive presence of Langui Lake, one of the largest and most beautiful bodies of water in the region. As you start the hike, you will see red mountains, wide grasslands, and the deep silence of the Andes.
As you ascend, the colors of Pallay Punchu become more intense: shades of red, green, cream, purple, and gray blend together in perfectly marked lines. From the top, you’ll have a privileged view of the entire valley and of the rock formations that make this place a unique natural spectacle.
If you love different landscapes, photography, and routes far from mass tourism, Pallay Punchu is an experience that truly deserves a full day during your trip.
The experience to Pallay Punchu begins around 4:00 a.m., when we pick you up from your hotel in Cusco. As we head south of the region, the sunrise lights up wide valleys, red mountains, and small Andean communities that keep their traditions alive. After the first part of the drive, we stop in Cusipata to enjoy a hot breakfast that will give you the energy needed for the hike. We then continue toward the Layo area, following a scenic road that reveals some of the most open and peaceful landscapes of the high Andean plateau.
Upon arrival at the trailhead, your guide will give you a brief orientation before starting the hike. The ascent takes approximately one to one and a half hours, crossing high meadows and reddish terrain where it is common to see alpacas, llamas, and sometimes vicuñas. Step by step, the distinctive shape of Pallay Punchu becomes more visible: natural colored lines forming a pattern similar to a traditional Andean poncho. Red, green, cream, yellow, and purple tones become more defined as you approach the upper viewpoint.
Once you reach the highest point at around 4,730 meters (15,515 ft), you will be rewarded with an impressive view of the mountain in all its dimension. Here you can admire its sharp ridges and multicolored stripes formed by minerals that have shaped one of Cusco’s most unique landscapes. From this viewpoint, it is also possible to see, weather permitting, the immense Langui Lake, with its blue waters stretching for kilometers.
You will have enough time to rest, take photos, and enjoy the silence of the highlands. After free time, we begin the descent along the same route back to the starting point, where we board the transportation. On the return trip, we stop again in Cusipata for lunch before continuing toward Cusco. The tour ends between 5:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m., marking the end of a day full of color, altitude, and breathtaking scenery.
The cost of the tour is USD 100 per person, with a guaranteed departure starting from 2 travelers.
This price includes round-trip transportation, bilingual guide, breakfast, buffet lunch, and full assistance throughout the experience.
The hike usually takes between 1 and 2 hours round trip. The ascent is gradual, but because of the altitude you will feel the effort more than in a regular hike. There are rest stops along the way, and the guide will adapt the pace to the group. Most travelers complete the hike without difficulties.
The highest viewpoint reaches approximately 4,730 meters (15,515 ft). At this altitude the oxygen level is lower, which is why we recommend having acclimatized in Cusco for at least one or two days before the tour. Staying hydrated and walking at a moderate pace helps prevent altitude sickness.
The trek is classified as moderate. It does not require technical climbing experience or advanced hiking skills. However, the altitude and cold can make the final section more demanding. People in good physical condition and regular walkers will find the route manageable.
The best time to visit is from April to November, when the weather is clearer and the views are spectacular. During the rainy season (December to March), it’s still possible to visit, but rain and clouds may limit the visibility. Your guide will check weather updates for the safest experience.
We recommend bringing warm clothing, sunscreen, gloves, a hat, trekking shoes, snacks and water. A layered outfit is ideal because temperatures change throughout the day. A small backpack (15–20 L) is enough for personal items and water.
The entrance ticket to the Pallay Punchu area is not included in the tour price and must be purchased separately. We always recommend carrying extra cash in soles for this and other personal expenses.
Yes, meals are included. You will enjoy a hot breakfast in Cusipata and a buffet lunch in a local restaurant. Vegetarian and special diet options are available upon request, so please let us know in advance.
Yes. The tour includes round-trip transportation from Cusco in a tourist vehicle. The driver and guide accompany the group from beginning to end.
Due to the altitude, it’s strongly advised to spend at least one or two nights in Cusco before the tour. This reduces the risk of altitude sickness and allows you to enjoy the experience more comfortably and safely.
Yes, children can join the tour as long as they are accompanied by a responsible adult. We recommend it for children over 8 years old who enjoy nature and can walk short mountain trails.
The itinerary may change in case of snow, heavy rain, road closures or government restrictions. Your guide will choose the safest possible option. In some cases the schedule may change to ensure visibility and safety.
Yes, last-minute bookings are possible depending on availability. However, we recommend booking early during high season for guaranteed departures and better organization of meals and transportation.
