Ausangate Circuit Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco, Pacchanta Community, Upis (4438 m)

The Ausangate Circuit expedition begins early at 4:30 a.m. We'll pick you up from your hotel to start a three-hour journey to the charming Pacchanta community (4334 m), our starting point. This picturesque village is rich in culture and will be our gateway. From there, you'll enjoy the first views of the imposing Vilcanota mountain range, with the majestic Apu Ausangate in all its splendor.

During the day, you'll have the opportunity to participate in various workshops immersing you in the rich local craftsmanship. You'll learn about alpaca fiber dyeing and the making of typical Ausangate clothing while observing locals dressed in colorful attire reflecting their cultural identity.

In the afternoon, we'll commence our hike to the Upis camp (4438 m), passing through stunning landscapes and alpaca grazing areas. Connecting with nature and the environment will be a truly enriching experience.

This first day provides a close encounter with authentic Andean culture as you delve into the beautiful landscapes of the Ausangate Circuit. Day 2: Upis, Arapa Pass (4738 m), Ananta (4700 m)

After a delicious breakfast, we'll embark on an exciting two-and-a-half-hour ascent to the Arapa Pass (4738 m) within the impressive Ausangate Circuit. During this stretch, we might be fortunate enough to spot the agile vicuñas, unique South American camelids that inhabit this route.

Once at the summit, we'll seize the opportunity to capture incredible photos of the surroundings before beginning a gradual descent of three and a half hours. Along this stretch, we'll witness magnificent views of the beautiful Yanacocha and Pucacocha lakes, delighting us with their scenic beauty.

Our next destination is Hatun Pucacocha Lake (4400 m), where we'll stop for lunch and set up our camp. From this point, you can appreciate the impressive landscape of the Ausangate valley with its reddish and dazzling hues.

Later, we'll continue our journey ascending to the Apacheta Pass (4917 m), from where the imposing Ausangate mountain can be majestically admired. We'll descend for approximately one hour until reaching Anantapata (4700 m), where we'll set up our camp. In the evening, we'll immerse ourselves in the cultural richness of the region with Andean music and singing workshops led by our experienced horsemen, cooks, and guides.

Day 3: Ananta, Rainbow Mountain, Ausangate Lake

We'll start our thrilling trek along the Ausangate Circuit at 5:00 a.m., heading towards Warmisaya (4960 m) for about an hour. During this stretch, we'll witness the majestic reddish mountains welcoming us to Rainbow Mountain. We'll then descend for 45 minutes to Surinecocha (4800 m).

We'll continue our journey for about 40 minutes to an hour, reaching the summit of Rainbow Mountain (5034 m). From there, we'll be privileged to witness the sunrise and capture incredible photos long before other groups arrive. Your guide will provide a detailed explanation of the significance of this place in the Andean world, immersing you in its cultural and spiritual meaning.

After a well-deserved rest, we'll begin our return to the starting point, ascending for approximately two and a half hours. We'll appreciate views of a beautiful green valley dotted with herds of llamas and alpacas until we reach the Ananta camp.

In the afternoon, we'll take an additional walk to reach the Ausangate Lake camp (4645 m), where we'll rest comfortably after enjoying a delicious dinner.

Our next adventure will take us to ascend to the highest point of this incredible route: Palomani Pass, located at 5,200 meters above sea level. With determination, we'll rise early, enjoy a delicious breakfast, and embark on this thrilling day. Today, we'll conquer the summit and contemplate the majesty of the Vilcanota mountain range!

For approximately two hours, we'll ascend to reach the Palomani Pass (5200 m), from where we'll enjoy the most impressive views of the Vilcanota mountain range. After a brief rest to admire the landscape, we'll begin the descent towards the Huchuy Phinaya community (4600 m), where we'll delight in a tasty lunch. In the afternoon, we'll gather to share legends and stories of the ancient inhabitants of the Ausangate area.

Prepare for a gradual ascent of two hours through the beautiful Jampa valley, accompanied by the imposing glaciers of the Callangate range, until we reach the final camp in Sorapata (4600 m). Upon your return, the camp will be prepared to welcome you. After enjoying an exquisite dinner, a tranquil night awaits you, surrounded by the serenity of the mountains.

Day 5: Huchuy Phinaya, Jampa Base Camp (4910 m)

Wake up to the stunning view of the Three Peaks mountains on this new day of our adventure! After a comforting breakfast, we'll prepare to face a final ascent. For approximately two and a half hours, we'll head towards the Jampa Pass (5052 m), a wide valley with lush vegetation, ideal for agriculture and animal husbandry by Andean communities. We'll take advantage of this moment to capture the beauty of the surroundings in photographs.

The ascent will be gradual, providing us the opportunity to contemplate the peak of Jampa Mountain, as well as the mountain ranges of Puca Punta, Caracol, and Tinke. We'll descend about 500 meters to reach our base camp. In the afternoon, we'll prepare with the necessary equipment and participate in practices and talks about the climbing awaiting us in the morning. We'll spend the night reflecting and motivating ourselves for one of the most exciting challenges of our Ausangate Circuit journey.

This day represents a crucial stage of our adventure, where we can enjoy stunning panoramic views and immerse ourselves in the preparation for the next challenge. Day 6: Jampa Base Camp, Summit 5500 m, Pacchanta, Cusco

Today, we'll wake up early for a 2:30 a.m. breakfast and begin the ascent at 3:00 a.m. towards the glacier tongue, which will take about an hour. From there, we'll face an ascent of approximately two hours to reach the summit. During our ascent on the glacier, we'll traverse small crevices and a 50-meter wall with a 40 to 50-degree incline before reaching the summit. Once at the top, we'll be rewarded with incredible views of the majestic mountain ranges of Ausangate. After enjoying 20 to 30 minutes at the summit, we'll start the descent to our base camp before embarking on the walk to the Pacchanta community.

The descent will take about three hours to reach Pacchanta (4334 m). During this last stage, we'll admire the beauty of the seven lakes that are an icon of this day trek. After several hours, we'll arrive in Pacchanta, a small community with relaxing hot springs, where we can enjoy a bath to soothe our muscles. Additionally, here we'll have the opportunity to have a delicious pachamanca lunch prepared by our talented chefs and horsemen. Later, we'll bid farewell to the valuable group of guides and porters who have accompanied us on this journey and embark on a three-hour return journey to Cusco.

This day marks the end of our unforgettable experience on the Ausangate Circuit, where we've challenged our skills and explored some of the most stunning landscapes in Peru. Throughout the journey, we've enjoyed panoramic views, overcome obstacles, and immersed ourselves in local culture. Now, we carry with us indelible memories and a sense of accomplishment that will accompany us always. Get ready to say goodbye to the mountains and return to Cusco with a heart full of gratitude and satisfaction!
