The city of Cusco is situated at an altitude of 3,399 meters above sea level (11,152 feet). This picturesque place features a remarkable variation in altitude in its surroundings, ranging from the Pilcopata jungle at 532 meters above sea level to the impressive Ausangate mountain, which reaches 6,384 meters.
Machu Picchu, the famous Inca citadel situated deep in the jungle, is about 2,430 meters (7,970 feet) above sea level. Although it is at a lower altitude than Cusco, it is important to consider that the climate and altitude can affect your experience.
If you are already in Cusco, it is crucial to consume fruits, Andean cereals, and stay well hydrated with 2 to 3 liters of water daily. Avoid consuming alcohol, highly seasoned foods, and those high in fat.
