The Quelccaya Glacier Full-Day Tour is one of the most impressive adventures you can experience from Cusco. This massive ice cap—considered the largest tropical glacier on the planet—is located deep in the Vilcanota Mountain Range and astonishes with its enormous white walls, absolute silence, and high-altitude landscapes that seem from another world.
The adventure begins with a drive to the remote village of Phinaya, a place where Andean life still preserves its ancestral essence. Surrounded by alpacas, turquoise lagoons, and wide highland pastures, we start the hike toward the natural viewpoints of Quelccaya. The route takes between 3 and 4 hours, through open terrain where you can observe local wildlife—vicuñas, flamingos, and high-Andean birds—as you approach the gigantic body of ice that has been studied by scientists from around the world.
Along the way, you will learn how Quelccaya has preserved thousands of years of climatic history in its ice layers, making it a natural archive that reveals ancient environmental changes. Our local guides, experts in Andean culture and glacier dynamics, will help you understand the significance of Quelccaya for both the communities and the ecosystems that depend on its waters.
This experience is designed for travelers seeking pure nature, accessible trekking, and a deep connection with the Andes. Everything is accompanied by responsible service, meals prepared by families from Phinaya, and a sustainable approach that protects the mountain and honors Pachamama.
The adventure to the Quelccaya Glacier begins at dawn, when we pick you up at 3:00 a.m. from your hotel in Cusco. We start a 5-hour journey toward the southern edge of the Vilcanota Mountain Range, driving along remote roads where the sunrise slowly lights up the wide landscapes of the highlands. Along the way, you’ll see reddish mountains, endless pastures, and small rural communities that still preserve their traditional Andean lifestyle.
Our first stop is the peaceful village of Phinaya, one of the last traditional settlements in the area. Here, we enjoy a hot Andean breakfast prepared with local ingredients, ideal to acclimate your body and prepare for the hike. We then continue by vehicle for one more hour until reaching the surroundings of the massive glacier.
Once the road ends, we begin an easy 30 to 40-minute hike to the natural viewpoints of the Quelccaya Glacier, considered the largest tropical glacier on Earth. The trail offers a unique spectacle: small crystal-clear lagoons, streams born directly from the ice, and the presence of vicuñas, high-Andean birds, and vast plains shaped by thousands of years of glacial activity. As you approach the viewpoint, the intimidating white wall of Quelccaya dominates the horizon with impressive force.
After enjoying the scenery, taking photographs, and having free time to contemplate the glacier, we return to Phinaya along the same route. There, a typical lunch prepared by local families awaits us—recipes and traditions that have been preserved for generations.
On the way back to Cusco, we make a special stop at Sibinacocha Lagoon, one of the largest, deepest, and most mystical bodies of water in the Peruvian highlands. Its blue tones and absolute silence provide the perfect moment to connect with nature.
Finally, we continue the route back to Cusco, arriving in the city at approximately 9:00 p.m., after a full day of majestic landscapes, Andean culture, and one of the most important glaciers on the planet.
The cost of the tour is USD 120 per person, with a guaranteed departure starting from 2 travelers.
This price includes round-trip transportation from Cusco, bilingual professional guide, breakfast in Phinaya, traditional lunch, and full assistance during the experience.
