The Manu Reserved Zone 6-Day Tour takes you into the heart of one of the most biodiverse and best-preserved jungles on the planet. During this deep adventure, you will explore the Reserved Zone of Manu National Park, a remote territory where the Amazon rainforest remains almost untouched, allowing wildlife to thrive in its highest expression.
This journey is a total immersion in nature. You will navigate rivers surrounded by primary forest, hike along trails home to monkeys, exotic birds, reptiles, amphibians, and iconic mammals such as the jaguar, the Amazonian tapir, and the majestic giant river otters. Each day takes you deeper into pristine ecosystems that only a few people in the world have the chance to experience.
The Manu Reserved Zone stands out for its incredible biodiversity and strict conservation practices. Here you will visit macaw clay licks, hidden lagoons, wildlife-rich oxbow lakes, floodplain forests, and an impressive diversity of plant species. Naturalist guides will accompany you on daytime and nighttime hikes, explaining how the ecosystem works and revealing secrets of the rainforest that most visitors never notice.
This 6-day, 5-night tour is designed for nature lovers, photographers, birdwatchers, and adventurers seeking a true Amazon experience. It’s a unique opportunity to feel the rainforest alive and powerful, just as it has been for thousands of years.
We begin our expedition to the Manu rainforest with an early pickup at your hotel around 5:00 a.m. From Cusco we travel in a private vehicle through impressive Andean mountains and rural landscapes rarely visited by travelers.
Our first stop is Ninamarca, an archaeological site with pre-Inca burial towers (chullpas) from the Lupaca culture. We then continue to Paucartambo, a charming colonial town known as the folkloric capital of Cusco, famous for its stone bridge and centuries-old cultural traditions.
Around midday, we reach the entrance to Manu National Park, one of South America’s most important protected areas. We descend along a road surrounded by dense mist, entering the Cloud Forest, a magical ecosystem full of orchids, bromeliads, birds, and mammals.
In the afternoon, we visit a special observation point to watch the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, Peru’s national bird, performing its colorful courtship ritual.
We arrive at Bamboo Lodge around 5:00 p.m. for our first night in the jungle.
After breakfast, we continue by road to the small community of Atalaya (700 m / 2,300 ft) on the Madre de Dios River. Here we board our boat and begin navigating one of the most important rivers of the Peruvian Amazon.
We stop at Manu Hot Springs, a perfect place to relax before continuing deeper into the jungle. In the afternoon, we arrive at our lodge in the forest and take a nighttime walk to the famous Tapir Clay Lick, where tapirs visit at night to feed on mineral-rich clay.
Tonight we stay in a rustic refuge in the middle of the rainforest—an unforgettable experience surrounded by the sounds of the Amazon.
Today we begin one of the most spectacular river journeys of the trip. From the clear waters of the Alto Madre de Dios, we enter the Manu River, known for its beauty and incredible biodiversity.
After registering at Limonal Control Station, we continue upriver, observing the wildlife that gathers along the riverbanks:
During the dry season especially, it is common to spot howler monkeys, squirrel monkeys, and with a bit of luck, even jaguars sunbathing on the shores.
After lunch on the riverbank, we reach our safari camp near Cocha Salvador. In the afternoon we explore the primary forest and visit Cocha Otorongo, where a 20-meter observation tower offers opportunities to see monkeys, birds, and possibly giant river otters.
Optional night walk to spot caimans, insects, frogs, and nocturnal mammals.
Overnight at Casa Matsiguenka, a community-run lodge operated by native families.
We start the day with a deep 3–4 hour hike through primary forest. We climb a 15-meter observation tower to see birds such as hoatzins, monkeys feeding on fruit, and a great variety of Amazon butterflies.
After lunch at camp, we explore Cocha Salvador on a silent catamaran—one of the best places in the park to see giant otters, black caimans, aquatic birds, Amazon turtles, and an impressive diversity of wildlife.
We end the day at our lodge, listening to the sounds of the rainforest at sunset.
After breakfast we begin our journey out of the Reserved Zone, navigating along the same rivers we explored on previous days. Along the way we continue observing wildlife and enjoying the stunning jungle scenery.
We spend our last night at Papaya Lodge, surrounded by lush vegetation.
Early in the morning, we return by boat to Atalaya, where our vehicle awaits us. The road trip back to Cusco offers spectacular views of the Amazon basin and the biological corridor of Manu.
We arrive in Cusco between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., ending an unforgettable expedition through one of the most important protected natural areas on the planet.
