Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain Trek with Children Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco, Pacchanta (4334 m), Upis (4438 m)

We'll pick you up at 4:30 a.m. and head in a private minivan to the starting point of our captivating hike towards the base of the majestic Ausangate mountain. Enjoy a delightful breakfast in the Pacchanta Community, situated at an altitude of 4334 m. After the meal, explore our craft workshop to uncover the secrets of this artistry with alpaca fiber, skillfully crafted by local artisans.

Later, post-lunch, embark on a hike to our campsite in Upis. Start with a brief ascent of about 30 minutes to reach a plateau where numerous alpacas graze. Along the way, walk alongside the imposing Ausangate, exploring its northern face. After crossing the plateau, descend to the Upis campsite, where we'll spend the night.

Day 2: Upis, Paso Arapa (4738 m), Pucacocha (4618 m)

Wake up at 5:00 a.m. to coca tea or coffee delivered directly to your tent, followed by a delicious breakfast. We then embark on a hike towards the Arapa Pass, rising to 4738 m above sea level. Along the way, you'll have the chance to spot vizcachas, alpacas, llamas, and, to your left, the imposing presence of Ausangate. Our guide will share insights into the flora, fauna, and the breathtaking landscape unfolding along the trail. If we're lucky, we may even spot vicuñas.

Throughout the day, relish the beauty of colorful lakes, eventually reaching our campsite at Pucacocha. Here, we'll be surrounded by majestic mountains and astonishing hanging glaciers. Witness and listen to the fascinating avalanches occurring towards the lake. After a comforting lunch and a short siesta, explore the surroundings of the lake to observe the diverse fauna and birds inhabiting this natural environment.

Day 3: Pucacocha, Paso Apacheta (4917 m), Ananta (4700 m)

Today brings a short but challenging day due to the steep ascent starting with the Apacheta Pass, situated at 4917 m. At the summit of this mountain, enjoy a magnificent and colorful stroll with panoramic views of the Ausangate Valley, lakes, and the imposing presence of Ausangate on the horizon. Subsequently, begin the descent that will lead us to the Ananta campsite at 4700 m.

The afternoon is free for you to interact with your children and take short walks around the campsite, where you can get up close with the alpacas and llamas in the area. Take advantage of this time to enjoy the serenity of the surroundings and connect with the natural beauty that surrounds us.

Day 4: Ananta, Paso Wamisaya, Rainbow Mountain, Ausangate Lagoon

Our day begins with a wake-up at 5:30 a.m., providing us with 30 minutes to enjoy breakfast before departing at 6 a.m. towards the impressive Rainbow Mountain, rising to 5034 m above sea level. After approximately 3 hours of walking, we'll reach the summit of this unique mountain, where we'll revel in its splendor for about 1 hour before returning to the camp for lunch.

Following a delicious meal, embark on a roughly 2-hour walk to our campsite at 4645 m, where we'll spend the night. This stretch allows us to further appreciate the majesty of the surrounding nature, culminating in a well-deserved rest at our next destination.

Day 5: Ausangate Lagoon, Paso Palomani, Surapata

We'll start our day early at 5:00 a.m. with a comforting coca tea delivered directly to your tent. After a quick breakfast, we'll immediately embark on an exciting hike to the highest point of our journey, Paso Palomani, located at 5200 m. From this vantage point, you'll feel the magnitude of Mount Ausangate and the stunning Rainbow Mountain, experiencing the sensation of being at the top of Ausangate. Here, witness the vast canyons and valleys of the Andes, with the imposing figure of Mount Ausangate as the local belief holds, acting as a protector.

Throughout the trek, enjoy views of various glacier peaks, babbling streams, rivers, small lakes, vizcachas, alpacas, local shepherds, and llamas. Descend cautiously and pass through the charming villages of Inkawasi before reaching the Surapata campsite for lunch. The night will be spent at this campsite, alongside your children, who will have completed an incredible journey through the highest pass of the route.

Day 6: Surapata, Paso Arapa, Pacchanta, Cusco

Every day begins early at 5:30 a.m. with a comforting coca tea delivered to your tent. The day kicks off with an ascent for about 2 hours, reaching the final pass, Jampa, at 5052 m. From this elevated position, impressive peaks and glacial lakes are revealed. Subsequently, we'll initiate a descent leading us to the 7 Lakes, where we'll marvel at the beautiful landscape offered by the majestic Ausangate.

After enjoying the views at the 7 Lakes, we'll continue our journey towards the lunch spot, Pacchanta, where our skilled chef and arrieros (muleteers) will prepare the final lunch of this memorable trek. In this picturesque setting, nestled in the mountains, you'll find charming natural hot springs. This will be the well-deserved conclusion after 6 days of walking with the children, exploring the wonders of Ausangate and Rainbow Mountain.
