The Jampa mountain, also known as Campa and Qampa, is the easiest and most popular mountain in Cusco and can be climbed with minimal high mountain experience. Require a hike through the glacier and, sometimes, a small rock climbing step according to the season. The summit offers a panoramic view that leads to Salkantay for 200 km to the northwest. Itinerary of the climb to the snowy Jampa

Day 1: Cusco, Pacchanta

The pick up of the climbers at 5.00 am in the morning from their hotel. The route goes until reaching the community of Pacchanta, during the journey the climbers will stop at the different attractive places on the route, to visualize the culture, the experiences of the people. The arrival in Pacchanta will be approximately at 8:00 am, where our Huillca team (guide, cook, muleteers) will wait for us with breakfast at our Huillca Restaurant. In the morning we will learn about the culture of Ausangate, its clothing, cultivation of native potatoes, livestock and local crafts. During the afternoon there will be a test of the equipment, an introduction to the main climbing maneuvers. Later at approximately 3:30 in the afternoon we will go to the Pacchanta Hot Springs.

Preparation day for Jampa climbing

Day 2. Pacchanta, Jampa Base Camp

This day we will leave for the base camp at approximately 8:00 am, we will begin with the ascent until we reach the lagoons of the Circuit of the 7 Lagunas del Ausangate, we will visit the lagoons and continue ascending until we reach the Jampa base camp 4,872 m, here We started with the mountain works, visualizing the route and preparing the equipment for the attack on the summit.

Day 3. Base camp, Jampa summit, Pacchanta, Cusco

Climbers should wake up at 3:15 am to have a light breakfast and start the summit attack at 4:00 am, the first steps will be to reach the glacier tongue that will last approximately 1 hour. After reaching it we will start the real attack until we reach the col, after which we will climb a steep section of 40° by 70m to reach the summit. The enjoyment of the summits is unique for this reason we will be at the summit for approximately 1 hour we will begin the descent in 2 hours until we reach the base camp for breakfast. Then we will pack all the equipment and descend until we reach the hot springs and take our transport to Cusco.

Recommendations for climbing Jampa

With the experience in the trip we leave you the following recommendations that are useful in your trip:

  • Wear the necessary clothing to combat the cold, gloves for your hands, a hat or the like that cover your ears.
  • Bring cash with you, recommended in soles (S/. = PEN) because it is the only thing they handle in Ausangate. The amount depends on your average personal travel expenses.
  • Backpack of 20-30 liters during the route, with the necessary and useful equipment on the route. Bring belongings such as cameras, batteries, sunscreens, water, snacks, etc.
  • For emergencies, wear snow goggles for climbing.
  • If your trip is with your children, it is advisable to book in the optimal season (May, June, July), you can also opt for a private trip for a good management of your itinerary.
  • Bring batteries for the electronic devices that you take for the trip or it could be a power bank.
  • Do not forget personal hygiene items and swimwear if you are going to enter the Pacchanta hot springs.
  • If you have a personal medical prescription you have to bring it because we will not have medications.

Reservation Policies

Reservations are made in advance with a 30% payment of the total cost. The remaining balance is paid in cash in Cusco during the informational briefing.

Changes and Cancellation Policies

Tour rescheduling is allowed with proper notice, except for Machu Picchu tours. Passenger no-shows will result in the total loss of the service. Cancellation or withdrawal from the service will not be eligible for a refund.

How long do I need to acclimatize for Jampa Climbing?

To climb Jampa Mountain, you must acclimatize for 2-3 days at an altitude above 3500 m.a.s.l. so that the body can get used to low pressure and oxygen. Do I always have to acclimatize? YES, because this expedition has an altitude of 5500 m.a.s.l. about. When booking this mountain expedition you have acclimatization as your first day.

Do I need to have experience in mountain activities to climb Jampa?

The answer is YES, knowledge of mountain climbing, handling of climbing equipment, ropes, use of crampons, ice ax is required. Being a climbing initiation mountain is an option but it always requires technical and theoretical knowledge of high mountain climbing.

How much luggage should I take on my Jampa climb?

For the expedition you can bring the equipment it requires, however for the summit attack you need to bring the following essentials. The small 20-liter backpack, which must contain snow goggles, water, batteries, camera or cell phone, sunscreen, lip balm, among others that you see fit for your ascent.

Note: Do not put fragile items inside the cargo bag because they can break when moving on the horses.
