The Classic Santa Cruz Trek – 4 Days is one of the most iconic trekking routes in the Cordillera Blanca, perfect for those seeking a challenging yet accessible adventure. Covering a distance of 50 km, this journey offers breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks such as Alpamayo, Artesonraju, and Taulliraju, as well as turquoise lakes and deep valleys brimming with Andean life. The trail crosses the Punta Unión Pass (4,750 m), the highest point of the trek, where hikers are rewarded with one of the most stunning panoramic views in the Peruvian Andes.
This trek is ideal for both experienced hikers and those attempting their first multi-day high-altitude trek. Along the route, camping takes place in strategic locations surrounded by majestic landscapes and clear skies that provide unforgettable starry nights. The trail also passes through traditional Andean communities, offering the opportunity to experience their culture and hospitality firsthand. With its towering mountains, well-marked paths, and pristine natural setting, the Santa Cruz Trek stands out as one of the best trekking experiences in Peru.
We begin our expedition with a scenic drive through the Callejón de Huaylas, an Andean valley framed by towering mountains and traditional villages that reflect the soul of the Peruvian highlands. As we ascend, we enter Huascarán National Park, home to some of the highest tropical peaks in the Andes.
We stop at the famous Llanganuco Lakes, two turquoise lagoons surrounded by queñual forests and snow-covered peaks. Next, we cross the Portachuelo de Llanganuco Pass (4,785 m), one of the most stunning viewpoints in the Cordillera Blanca, offering privileged views of Huascarán, Chopicalqui, and Huandoy.
We descend to Vaquería (3,700 m), where the hike begins. Our muleteer team will prepare the pack animals while we gradually ascend to the Paria Valley (3,890 m). Along the way, we encounter Andean farmers and shepherds still practicing traditional agriculture and herding.
Today is one of the most demanding and spectacular days of the trek. The trail gradually climbs a glacial valley, flanked by towering peaks. After around four hours of ascent, we face the steep final push to the Punta Unión Pass (4,750 m) — about an hour of uphill hiking.
Reaching the summit, we’re rewarded with one of the best panoramic views in the Peruvian Andes. Snow-capped giants such as Taulliraju, Artesonraju, Pucajirca, and Rinrijirca rise before us, along with the deep Santa Cruz Valley below.
We descend slowly through dramatic high-mountain scenery to the wide valley of Taullipampa (4,250 m), where we set up camp with stunning views of surrounding peaks.
This day leads us to the Alpamayo Viewpoint, a privileged spot to admire the majestic Alpamayo (5,947 m)—often hailed as the most beautiful mountain in the world—alongside Quitaraju and Artesonraju. After enjoying sunrise in this magical setting, we begin our descent through the Santa Cruz Valley.
Along the way, we pass glacial lakes and retreating hanging glaciers—clear indicators of climate change in the Andes. The trail continues through alpine meadows and rocky formations until we reach our camp at Llamacorral (3,750 m), located by a river.
The final day takes us down through the Quebrada Santa Cruz Valley, with a gradual descent through Andean forests and milder landscapes. As we approach Cashapampa (2,900 m), the vegetation becomes denser, marking the transition from high-altitude ecosystems to inter-Andean valleys.
At Cashapampa, our private transport awaits to return us to Huaraz, concluding one of the most impressive treks in the Peruvian Andes.
The 4-Day Santa Cruz Trek is one of the most iconic routes in the Cordillera Blanca, ideal for those seeking an accessible challenge with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks, turquoise lakes, and deep Andean valleys. The best time to hike the Santa Cruz Trail is from May to September, which corresponds to the dry season in the Cordillera Blanca. During this period, weather conditions are more stable, with clear skies, minimal rainfall, and spectacular panoramic views of snow-capped mountains such as Alpamayo, Taulliraju, and Artesonraju.
While it is possible to do the trek at other times of the year, it is not recommended between November and March, as this is the rainy season in the Peruvian highlands. Trails may become muddy and slippery, and visibility is often reduced, which lowers both safety and scenic enjoyment.
Technical mountaineering experience is not required, but it is highly recommended to have done previous multi-day or high-altitude hikes. The Santa Cruz Trek is considered moderate to challenging, with long ascents and descents, and altitudes reaching 4,750 meters above sea level.
The highest point is Punta Unión Pass (4,750 m), which requires a solid level of physical fitness and altitude adaptation. We recommend having good cardiovascular endurance, physical condition, and a positive attitude to enjoy the trek safely.
Proper acclimatization is essential to prevent altitude sickness. Ideally, you should arrive in Huaraz at least 2 or 3 days before the trek and complete acclimatization hikes such as:
