Classic Santa Cruz Trek Itinerary – 4 Days

Day 1: Huaraz – Llanganuco Lakes – Portachuelo Pass – Vaquería – Paria

We begin our expedition with a scenic drive through the Callejón de Huaylas, an Andean valley framed by towering mountains and traditional villages that reflect the soul of the Peruvian highlands. As we ascend, we enter Huascarán National Park, home to some of the highest tropical peaks in the Andes.

We stop at the famous Llanganuco Lakes, two turquoise lagoons surrounded by queñual forests and snow-covered peaks. Next, we cross the Portachuelo de Llanganuco Pass (4,785 m), one of the most stunning viewpoints in the Cordillera Blanca, offering privileged views of Huascarán, Chopicalqui, and Huandoy.

We descend to Vaquería (3,700 m), where the hike begins. Our muleteer team will prepare the pack animals while we gradually ascend to the Paria Valley (3,890 m). Along the way, we encounter Andean farmers and shepherds still practicing traditional agriculture and herding.

  • Distance: 8 km
  • Hiking time: 5 hours
  • Max altitude: 4,785 m (Portachuelo Pass)
  • Overnight: Camp at Paria

Day 2: Paria – Punta Unión Pass – Taullipampa

Today is one of the most demanding and spectacular days of the trek. The trail gradually climbs a glacial valley, flanked by towering peaks. After around four hours of ascent, we face the steep final push to the Punta Unión Pass (4,750 m) — about an hour of uphill hiking.

Reaching the summit, we’re rewarded with one of the best panoramic views in the Peruvian Andes. Snow-capped giants such as Taulliraju, Artesonraju, Pucajirca, and Rinrijirca rise before us, along with the deep Santa Cruz Valley below.

We descend slowly through dramatic high-mountain scenery to the wide valley of Taullipampa (4,250 m), where we set up camp with stunning views of surrounding peaks.

  • Distance: 12 km
  • Hiking time: 7–8 hours
  • Max altitude: 4,750 m (Punta Unión Pass)
  • Overnight: Camp at Taullipampa

Day 3: Taullipampa – Alpamayo Viewpoint – Llamacorral

This day leads us to the Alpamayo Viewpoint, a privileged spot to admire the majestic Alpamayo (5,947 m)—often hailed as the most beautiful mountain in the world—alongside Quitaraju and Artesonraju. After enjoying sunrise in this magical setting, we begin our descent through the Santa Cruz Valley.

Along the way, we pass glacial lakes and retreating hanging glaciers—clear indicators of climate change in the Andes. The trail continues through alpine meadows and rocky formations until we reach our camp at Llamacorral (3,750 m), located by a river.

  • Distance: 15 km
  • Hiking time: 6–7 hours
  • Max altitude: 4,750 m (Alpamayo Viewpoint)
  • Overnight: Camp at Llamacorral

Day 4: Llamacorral – Cashapampa – Huaraz

The final day takes us down through the Quebrada Santa Cruz Valley, with a gradual descent through Andean forests and milder landscapes. As we approach Cashapampa (2,900 m), the vegetation becomes denser, marking the transition from high-altitude ecosystems to inter-Andean valleys.

At Cashapampa, our private transport awaits to return us to Huaraz, concluding one of the most impressive treks in the Peruvian Andes.

  • Distance: 10 km
  • Hiking time: 3–4 hours
  • Max altitude: 3,750 m (Llamacorral)

Frequently Asked Questions – Santa Cruz Trek 4 Days

What is the best time to do the Santa Cruz Trek?

The best time to hike the Santa Cruz Trail is from May to September, which corresponds to the dry season in the Cordillera Blanca. During this period, weather conditions are more stable, with clear skies, minimal rainfall, and spectacular panoramic views of snow-capped mountains such as Alpamayo, Taulliraju, and Artesonraju.

While it is possible to do the trek at other times of the year, it is not recommended between November and March, as this is the rainy season in the Peruvian highlands. Trails may become muddy and slippery, and visibility is often reduced, which lowers both safety and scenic enjoyment.

Do I need previous experience in high-altitude trekking to join?

Technical mountaineering experience is not required, but it is highly recommended to have done previous multi-day or high-altitude hikes. The Santa Cruz Trek is considered moderate to challenging, with long ascents and descents, and altitudes reaching 4,750 meters above sea level.

The highest point is Punta Unión Pass (4,750 m), which requires a solid level of physical fitness and altitude adaptation. We recommend having good cardiovascular endurance, physical condition, and a positive attitude to enjoy the trek safely.

How should I acclimatize before the trek?

Proper acclimatization is essential to prevent altitude sickness. Ideally, you should arrive in Huaraz at least 2 or 3 days before the trek and complete acclimatization hikes such as:

  • Laguna 69 (4,600 m)
  • Laguna Churup (4,450 m)
  • Pastoruri Glacier (5,000 m)

We also suggest:

  • Drinking plenty of water (at least 3 liters per day)
  • Avoiding alcohol and heavy meals
  • Getting enough sleep and rest
  • Drinking coca tea or using altitude medication as advised by a doctor

How many people are in a group and how are they organized?

Group tours typically consist of 4 to 10 participants, ensuring a personalized, safe, and enjoyable experience. This group size also encourages camaraderie and interaction among travelers from different backgrounds.

For those seeking a more intimate adventure, we offer private tours, available year-round. Private treks are ideal for families, couples, friend groups, or nature photographers who want more privacy, flexibility, and custom pacing.

What does the tour include?

The tour is designed to provide a comprehensive and worry-free trekking experience. It includes:

  • Certified mountain guide (bilingual: Spanish/English)
  • Professional cook with experience in high-altitude treks
  • All meals: breakfast, snacks, lunch, afternoon tea, dinner
  • Pack mules and muleteers (up to 10 kg of gear per person)
  • High-altitude tents (4-season, 3-person tent used by 2 people)
  • Dining tent, kitchen tent, and toilet tent
  • Foam mattress and inflatable sleeping pad
  • Private transportation to/from Huaraz
  • First aid kit and emergency oxygen

Huillca Expedition provides all logistical equipment, including tents, kitchenware, food, and support staff. You only need to carry your daypack with essentials.

Where do we sleep during the trek? Is it safe?

Each night, we camp in strategically located sites along the route, surrounded by lakes, valleys, and mountain peaks. We use high-quality, weather-resistant tents, designed for the harsh conditions of the Andes.

Our staff sets up and dismantles the camp daily, allowing you to rest comfortably without additional effort. Sleeping gear includes inflatable and foam pads to insulate from the ground and cold.

Is there cell phone signal or internet access on the trail?

No. The Santa Cruz Trek takes place in a remote region of the Cordillera Blanca, with no mobile coverage or internet access. This is a great opportunity to disconnect from technology and reconnect with nature.

We recommend informing family and contacts of your plans before departure and handling any online tasks in advance.

What temperatures can I expect during the trek?

Temperature varies greatly depending on elevation and time of day:

  • Daytime: Between 10°C and 20°C, especially if sunny
  • Nighttime: Can drop to -5°C or lower, particularly at higher campsites

You’ll need proper cold-weather gear, including thermal layers, a warm hat, gloves, and a waterproof jacket to stay safe and comfortable.

Do I need to carry all my luggage during the trek?

No. Each participant is allowed to pack up to 10 kg of gear, which will be transported by pack mules. You’ll only carry a light daypack (20–30 L) with essentials such as water, snacks, layers, sunblock, and camera gear.

This system allows you to hike comfortably and focus on the scenery.

Are there showers during the trek?

There are no showers available on the trail. For personal hygiene, we recommend bringing:

  • Biodegradable wet wipes
  • Quick-dry towel
  • A bottle of water for basic cleaning (you may use river water responsibly)

Our team follows strict hygiene and environmental care protocols throughout the trek.

What happens if I can’t finish the trek due to illness or fatigue?

If a participant experiences altitude sickness, extreme exhaustion, or injury, the guide will assess the situation and take immediate action. If necessary, arrangements will be made to evacuate or assist the participant to the nearest accessible point for return to Huaraz.

That’s why it’s essential to have travel insurance that covers high-altitude evacuations, accidents, and medical care, especially for international travelers.

How much does the tour cost and how do I book it?

  • Group tour price: USD 410 per person
  • A 50% non-refundable deposit is required to confirm your reservation
  • Remaining balance must be paid before the trek begins

Accepted payment methods:

  • PayPal (6% international transaction fee applies)
  • Bank transfers (Peru or international)
  • Yape or Plin (for payments within Peru)
  • Cash at our office in Huaraz

We highly recommend booking at least 1 month in advance to ensure availability of guides, gear, and permits.
