Misti is one of the seven active volcanoes located in the Pilo-Quaternary volcanic chain of southern Peru, part of the Central Andes Volcanic Zone. Misti has an altitude of 5,822 meters (19,101 feet), with a vertical drop of 3,500 meters (11,482 feet) from the Plaza de Armas in Arequipa. The distance from the Arequipa Cathedral to the crater is only 17 kilometers (10.5 miles) in a straight line. On the opposite side, towards the Altiplano, the drop is 1,600 meters (5,249 feet).
Recent geological and geophysical studies show that Misti volcano is approximately 800,000 years old and is situated on a base made up of rock formations known as "sillares." These "sillares" can be widely observed in the Chili River canyon and across the plains southwest of the Arequipa-Yura highway.
