Live a unique high-mountain experience with our Coropuna Volcano ascent tour (6,425 m) in 2 days, a demanding yet unforgettable expedition in the heart of the Peruvian Andes. Coropuna, considered the highest volcano in Peru, is located in the Arequipa region and is one of the favorite destinations for climbers seeking a technical challenge away from traditional routes. This 15 km adventure takes you through spectacular landscapes, snowfields and impressive views, designed for climbers with good physical condition and technical preparation.
Coropuna not only stands out for its altitude, but also for its cultural value. Known as the “Golden Mountain” due to its glowing color during eruptions, it was considered an Apu (sacred mountain) by pre-Hispanic cultures, where rituals such as the Ccapacc Ccocha were performed. From its slopes, the meltwater feeds the valleys of Cotahuasi, Majes and Viraco, reaffirming its importance as a source of life and spirituality. This tour combines adventure, history and extreme nature, ideal for those who want to explore one of the most challenging and mystical summits in Peru.
We depart from Arequipa at 2:00 a.m. to begin a 10-hour journey in private transportation. Along the way, we cross the fertile Majes Valley and pass through the traditional town of Chuquibamba, making stops for acclimatization and supplies. Around midday, we reach the end of the vehicle route (approx. 4,800 m a.s.l.), the starting point of the hike to Base Camp.
The hike to camp takes about 3 hours, moving across volcanic moraine terrain. We reach Base Camp at 5,100 m a.s.l., where we set up tents, rest and have a warm dinner to recover energy. We spend the night in high-mountain tents, fully prepared for summit day.
Summit day begins at midnight (12:00 a.m.) with a hot drink and a light breakfast. We start the ascent to the summit of Coropuna, an 8-hour climb across snow and glacier terrain, requiring the use of technical equipment. At around 7:00 a.m., we reach the summit at 6,425 m a.s.l., the highest volcano in Peru. From the top, we enjoy panoramic views of the Volcanic Range, Ampato, Chila and other peaks of the southern Andes.
After about an hour at the summit, we begin the descent back to Base Camp (approx. 4 hours), where we take a short break and pack up. We then hike for another 2 hours to meet our vehicle at 2:00 p.m. Finally, we return to Arequipa, arriving around 10:00 p.m., ending an unforgettable high-altitude expedition.
